THOUSAND PILLAR TEMPLE

Thousand pillar temple also known as the Rudreshwar Swamy Temple is located in Hanamkonda and is one of the most important parts of the Warangal City.

The temple was constructed in the 1163 AD by the great Rudra Deva. Every part of the temple depicts the typical Chalukya style of architecture.

As the name suggest, this temple boasts of many exquisitely carved pillars. Its rock cut elephant sculpture, massive monolith of Nandi (Lord Shiva’s divine vehicle), intricate carvings will leave you mesmerized. The spiritual aura of Thousand Pillar Temple makes the experience even more enriching.

Architecture of Thousand Pillar Temple

Constructed throughoutthe period of 1163 AD during the reign of King Rudradeva, one thousand Pillar Temple is considered to be a masterpiece of vishwakarma sthapathis of Kakatiya kingdom.

Thousand Pillar Temple has been in-built the type of architecturejust like Chalukyan temples. it’ssaid to be named on the King Rudra Deva and thusis called as Sri Rudreshwara Swamy Temple.

Thousand Pillar Temple, engineered at the bottom of Hanamkonda hill, is devotedto 3 deities. There are 3 totally different shrines, one for every presiding divinity. known as as Trikutalayam, these 3 main deities of the temple are Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Hindu deity.

The shrine of Lord Shiva is facing the east direction whereas the opposite2 shrines face South and West. The shrines of Lord Vishnu and Lord surya are connected to the main shrine of Lord Shiva via a square formed mandapam.

On the fourth aspect of Thousand Pillar Temple there’s a beautifully sculpted monolith of Nandi who is Lord Shiva’s sacred bull, on a platform. engraved out of one stone, sculpture of Nandi presents a glimpse into the creative fineness of bygone eras.

The sculpture is facing east direction, that is completely different from other statues of Nandi that typically face west.
