Ooty is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is from April to June, and September to November, when the weather is cool and pleasant, and the hills are covered in a lush green blanket.

Located at an altitude of 8,650 feet above sea level, Doddabetta Peak is the highest peak in the Nilgiri range. From the top, you can get a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The term Doddabetta means Big Mountain in Badaga language. It is a combination of two words Dodda meaning big and Betta which means mountain. It satiates the desire of an avid trekker yearning for the best place to trek with its awe-inspiring views.

The grandeur of the mountain along with the sub alpine shrubs and shola thickets exudes admiration. There are 24 higher peaks in the Nilgiris and Doddabetta is the highest peak among them. It is frequently visited by travel aficionados interested in outdoor pursuits like trekking.

The main attractions you find surrounding the lake are the boat races and boat pageantry organized as a part of the Summer Festival in Ooty.

There are the Lower Garden, which has the fern house that harbors one hundred and twenty seven species of ferns; the New Garden, which contains the rose garden.

A lot of natural floral carpets and natural ponds; the Italian Garden, laid down by Italian Prisoners of War from the First World War

Located 20 kms away from Ooty in the Ooty-Mysore road, the Pykara lake has been developed into a thoroughly enjoyable picnic spot by the addition of a boat house and restaurant.

Containing more than twenty thousand varieties of roses, the Rose Garden is one of the most beautiful and well maintained gardens you find in the country, or perhaps, the world. The climate of Ooty is ideal for the plants to have a long blooming season.

Ooty Tea Museum is a must-visit for tea lovers. The museum showcases the history and evolution of tea production in the region and offers visitors a chance to sample some of the local teas.

Although you can stop to enjoy the hypnotising aroma and mesmerising views at numerous places, the Tea Estate View Point near the Doddabetta Peak is worth a visit.

You can click photos of the tea plantations across the slopes and also, walk down the trails to feel the tea leaves for real.

Mukurthi National Park

Mukurthi National Park is a protected wildlife reserve located in the Nilgiri hills. It is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including several rare and endangered species.

Bordered by Mudumalai National Park and Silent Valley National Park, the Mukurthi National Park is one of the best trekking places in Ooty.

The park is part of the Nilgiri Bio Reserve which is India’s first Bio Reserve. The vegetation, climate and appearance of the Park bear a striking resemblance to that of the Himalayas minus the snow.

Montane grasslands and shrublands on a high altitude, strong winds, low temperature and sholas scattered around – that’s what the forest is like.

There are many rivers and streams running through the park and they are often frequented by the different species of fauna that inhabit the jungle.
