Golu Devta Temple, Almora – History, How To Reach

Golu Devta Temple is a hindu temple which is located on Pithoragarh Highway, 8 km from Almora.

The temple is presided by the deity of Golu Ji, an incarnation of Lord Shiva in the form of Gaur Bhairav,

There is a statue of Golu Devta riding a white horse, wearing a white turban and holding a bow and arrow in the temple. Devotees from all over come to this temple seeking justice.

Golu Ji is reckoned to be the God of Justice and it is a common belief that when someone worships him in one of his temples in Uttarakhand, Golu Devta provides justice and makes wishes of his devotees come true.

According to legend, the temple was built in the 12th century by a commander of the Chand dynasty. There are many stories about Golu Devta, the god of justice. The most famous of them are the rulers of the Katyuris dynasty who ruled here from the 7th to the 12th century.

Golu Maharaj was a prince or commander of the Khajuri dynasty. It’s not clear yet. He is a very brave warrior. When she was born, the other queens, out of jealousy, threw her into the river and placed a stone there.

He was rescued by a fisherman. Later he punished the queen. Later he became king and became very righteous. Thereafter, he became known for his speed in getting things done.

  • Additionally, many devotees demand justice by writing their problems and wishes on stamp paper. Numerous bells and seals hang throughout the temple. It is not difficult to see from this that people have huge and firm faith in Golu Devta. Santosh Pant, the priest of the temple, said that the Guardapura temple is world-famous for worshiping the God of Justice. Bells were rung in temples and prayers were written in the name of Gwel Dev.
  • These bells are hung by the devotees as offerings making a wish or in thanks on the completion of one’s wish. 
  •  The walls of the temple are enclosed with court stamp papers by those who did not get fairness in the court. Around the temple are hanging 1000s of bells, which have been donated by those people whose wishes have, been fulfilled.

By Air

The nearest airport to Almora is at Pantnagar, the seat of a famous agricultural university, about 127 KMs From Almora.

From there you can opt for a taxi to the temple.

By Train

The nearest railway station is at Kathgodam situated around 90 KMs away. Kathgodam is connected by rail directly with all majority north indian cities.

By Road

Chitai Golu Temple is well connected through road network. Since air and rail connectivity in Uttarakhand is limited, road network is the best and easily available transport option.
