Pancha Bhoota Sthalams – The Tale of 5 Shiva Temples

Lord Shiva is worshipped for many reasons all over India. However, in South India, He is worshipped as the presiding deity of the five elements of Nature, and is called Bhootapati or Bhootnath

Na | Ma | Shi | Va | Ya – these five syllables indicate the five elements (known as Bhoota in Sanskrit) – Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. The five elements are the building blocks of everything in Creation, including the human body, and Lord Shiva is the upholder of the five elements.

Chidambaram Nataraja Temple which is also referred to as Thillai Nataraja temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the heart of the temple town of Chidambaram,Tamil Nadu.

Chidambaram is one of the Panchabootha Sthalas, where the Lord is worshipped in his manifestation as sky or Aagayam (“pancha” – meaning five, bootha – meaning the elements: earth, water, fire, wind and space and “sthala” meaning location).

The word Chidambaram may be derived from chit, meaning “consciousness”, and ambaram, meaning “sky” (from aakasam or aakayam); it refers to the chidaakasam, the sky of consciousness, which is the ultimate aim one should attain according to all the Vedas and scriptures.

Srikalahasti Temple also known as SriKalahasteeswara temple is one of the famous Lord Shiva temples located in Chittoor district of the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh.

This temple is one of the Panchabhoota Sthalams, representing wind. The temple is also regarded as Rahu-Ketu kshetra and Dakshina Kailasam.

The name of Srikalahasti Temple is derived from a famous mythological legend. The myth states that a spider (Sri), a snake (Kala), and an elephant (Hasti) used to worship Lord Shiva in the town to attain Moksha.

Jambukeshwarar Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is also one of the five Pancha Bootha sthalams(5 Elements Temple) and is located in Tiruchirapalli of Tamil Nadu,India.

Jambukeshwarar Temple is a representation of Jal (the water element). This temple is situated in Coromandel between two rivers, Cauvery in south, coleroon in North.

Arunachalam Temple also known as Arunachalesvara Temple or Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar Temple is an important temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, this temple belongs to the five Shiva temples dedicated to the five elements of nature. The presiding deity is in the form of Agni Lingam (fire element).

It is significant to the Hindu sect of Saivism as one of the temples associated with the five elements, the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, and specifically the element of fire, or Agni.

5. Ekambareswarar Temple

Ekambareswarar Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Kanchipuram in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. This temple is believed to be reconstructed in  600 AD by Pallavas which means it is way older.

It is significant to the Hindu sect of Saivism as one of the temples associated with the five elements, the Pancha Bhoota Stalas(Pancha indicates five, Bhoota means elements and Stala means place), and specifically the element of earth, or Prithvi.

Main deity here is Ekambareswarar or Shiva, worshipped as the Prithivi Lingam. A Somaskanda panel featuring Shiva, Parvati and Skanda adorns the rear of the main shrine, which has been held in worship for centuries together.
