Chaturbhuj Temple, also known as the Chaturbhuj Mandir, is a Hindu temple located in Orchha, a town in the Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh, India.

History of Chaturbhuj Temple

According to popular belief, when the temple was completed, an idol of Lord Rama was brought from Ayodhya to be installed in the Chaturbhuj Temple.

However, during the installation process, a sage appeared and declared that Lord Rama wanted to stay in the nearby Raja Ram Temple. Consequently, the idol was moved to the Raja Ram Temple, where it resides to this day.

The construction of the Chaturbhuj Temple took place during a period when the Bundela dynasty was flourishing.

Orchha was the capital of the kingdom, and the construction of magnificent temples and palaces was a symbol of the dynasty’s power and patronage of the arts. The temple stands as a testament to the religious and cultural significance of the era.

Architecture of Chaturbhuj Temple

The temple has a rectangular plan and is built on a large stone platform. It features a single tower or shikhara that rises to a considerable height, giving the temple an imposing appearance. The tower is crowned with a conical roof known as an amalaka.

The main entrance of the Chaturbhuj Temple is adorned with ornate carvings and sculptures. The facade of the temple is intricately decorated with various motifs, including floral patterns, geometric designs, and scenes from Hindu mythology.

If you offer an extra tip to the priest or the caretaker, they will take you to the hidden stairs that lead to the rooftop of the temple. Words cannot describe the picturesque view of the entire city atop this temple roof. Also, make it a point to visit the market that is nestled right below the stairs of the temple. The metal and copper work is amazing and some bargaining can fetch you a good price.

The nearest major airport is the Gwalior Airport, located about 120 kilometers away from Orchha. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Orchha.

Alternatively, you can also fly to the Khajuraho Airport, which is approximately 175 kilometers away from Orchha.

By Rail

The nearest railway station to Orchha is the Jhansi Junction, which is well-connected to major cities in India.

From Jhansi, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach Orchha. The distance between Jhansi and Orchha is around 16 kilometers.

By Road

Orchha is well-connected by road and can be reached by buses, taxis, or private vehicles. It is approximately 16 kilometers away from Jhansi, and the journey takes around 30 minutes by road.

You can also reach Orchha by taking a bus from nearby cities like Gwalior, Khajuraho, or Jabalpur.
