This temple is built in Marathi style architecture. Many devotees from abroad come to visit this temple. Talking about the name of the temple, it is said that a cowherd had shown the Shivling located in this temple to his guru Shri Pandurang. Whose name was Babylon. That is why this temple was named as Shri Babulnath.

History of Babulnath Temple

Legend has it that a “swayambhu” or self-incarnated shivling had existed here since the 12th century. Way before Malabar Hill was one of the most coveted addresses in South Bombay, this place is believed to have existed as an expansive hill owned by a goldsmith named Pandurang.

As Per legend, his cows grazed on these lush green pastures and became healthy specimens. They were herded by Babul, a simple man with a penchant for playing the flute. It was an idyllic setting as Babul would play the flute, the cows would feed to their heart’s content and yield enough milk to suffice for Pandurang’s needs and more.

One day, Pandurang noticed that one of his perfectly healthy cows had no milk to give. Upon asking why, Babul told his master that this was often the case with this particular cow and what was even more curious was how it came to pass. The said cow would often make her way to a specific spot on the hill and release her milk on the ground.
