PATAL BHUVANESHWAR TEMPLE

Patal Bhuvaneshwar Temple is located in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, which has also been mentioned in the Puranas. 

It is also believed that the secret of the end of the world is also hidden in the womb of this cave. This temple is an unmatched combination of mystery and beauty.

Before going to this temple, one has to go through the memorial of Major Sameer Katwal. 

After walking for some distance, you will see the Grill Gate Gate, from where the Patal Bhuvaneshwar temple begins. 

This cave is 90 feet below, where this temple is entered through a very narrow path. When you walk a little further, you will see the artwork of the rocks here like elephants.

Again you will get to see rock artefacts which depict the king surplus of serpents. It is said that Surplus has taken the weight of the world on its head. 

Based on the mythology, there are four gates in this temple, which are known as Ranadwar, Papdwar, Dharmadwar and Mokshadwar. It is said that when Ravana died, the papdwara was closed. After this, the battlefield was also closed after the battle of Kurukshetra.

History of Patal Bhuvaneshwar Temple

It is said about this temple that the king of Surya dynasty and king Rituparna who ruled Ayodhya in Treta Yuga discovered this cave, after which he found king surplus of serpents here. It is said that King Rituparna was the first person to discover the temple by humans. 

Surplus took Rituparna inside the cave, where he had the privilege of having darshan of the deities as well as Lord Shiva. It is said that after that this cave was not discussed and then this cave was rediscovered by the Pandavas in Dwapar Yuga. 

Where they used to worship God near this cave, Skanda Purana mentions that Mahadev Shiva himself resides in Patal Bhubaneshwar and other deities come to worship him here. 

According to mythology, the temple was discovered in Kaliyuga by Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya in the eighth century, where he installed a copper Shiva linga here.

Interesting Facts About Patal Bhuvaneshwar

It is believed that the severed head of Lord Ganesha has been installed in the temple. The Ganesh idol present here is called Adiganesh. 

There are four pillars in this cave which represent the ages – Satyuga, Tretayuga, Dwaparayuga and Kaliyuga. There is no change in the pillars of the first three sizes, but the pillars of Kaliyuga are more in length. 

Another special thing about this cave is that there is a Shivling which is growing continuously, it is believed that when this Shivling touches the ceiling of the cave, then the world will end. 

The four Dhams can also be visited simultaneously in the cave. It is believed that Kedarnath, Badrinath, Amarnath can be seen together in the cave. It is said that the stone present in this cave can be known when the world will end.

Buses and taxis are available in Tanakpur. The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport, which is 224 km away from Patal Bhubaneshwar.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Tanakpur railway station, which is 154 km away from Patal Bhubaneshwar.

By Road

This place is well connected to all the places where you can reach easily. It is well connected to major cities like New Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata. Taxis and buses are easily available from the railway station or the airport.
