Suchindram Temple

Suchindram Temple is a Hindu temple located in the village of Suchindram in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to the Hindu gods Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, who are worshipped together as the Trimurti.

Legend behind Suchindram Temple, Kanyakumari

There are many legends behind Suchindram Temple. According to one of the popular story of the Suchindram Temple, one day the holy Trinity, Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu arrived here at the ancient temple.

Devi Anusaya, who is wife of saint Atri lived here. Trinity, decided to test Anusaya. Hence, in the absence of Sage Atri, They went to Anusaya, a chaste woman, in the guise of three sages and asked for food. However, when offered food and lams , they refused stating that they have vowed to take offerings only from people who are not clothed.

As it was considered as sin to refuse a help of offering to seeker, she decided to offer them food and fulfill their demand. She sprinkled holy water on all the three sages and turned into babies; Shiva as Durvasa, Vishnu as Dattatreya and Brahma as Chandra.

It was then she fulfilled their demands and fed all the three babies. Seeing this, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Parvati and Goddess Lakshmi came down and asked to return their husband in their original form.

All the three Gods were turned into their original form after this. While leaving for their holy abode, all Trimurthi, on the request of Anusaya, manifested as Swayambhu Lingas, under the Amaltas tree, known as Sthala Vriksham, which is now more than 2500 years old. A small shrine, has been constructed Konnaya in front of this holy tree.

Dress Code in Suchindram Temple

Men are required to take off their shirts and have to proceed bare chested. Male Children are permitted to keep on their baniyans/vests. 

Women are suggested to dress appropriately (avoid jeans or skirts).

History of Suchindram Temple

The temple is believed to have been built in the 7th century AD and has been mentioned in several ancient Hindu texts. It is known for its unique architecture, which is a fusion of Dravidian and Pandyan styles.

The temple complex houses several shrines, mandapams (hall), and a large pillared hall that serves as the main attraction of the temple.

The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, who is worshipped as Sthanumalayan or Suchindram Thanumalayan, a combination of Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. The temple also houses an idol of Lord Hanuman, who is considered to be the protector of the temple.

Architecture of Suchindram Temple

One of the unique features of the temple is the musical pillars with a height of 18 feet , located in the main hall. These pillars have been carved out of a single granite stone. Located in the area of Alankara Mandapam presenting exceptional example of architecture.

When tapped, these pillars produce different musical notes, creating a harmonious sound. The temple also has a shrine dedicated to Lord Anjaneya, who is depicted as playing a musical instrument.

In addition to its religious significance, the Suchindram Temple is also known for its natural beauty. The temple is surrounded by lush green trees and is located near the Bay of Bengal, adding to its picturesque location.

The temple attracts a large number of devotees during festivals such as Mahashivaratri, Navaratri, and Vaikunta Ekadashi. It is also a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to admire its architectural beauty and historical significance.

How To Reach Suchindram Temple?

By Air

The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport which is 78 kms from the Temple. Taxis are available at the Airport towards Suchindram where the temple is situated.

By Rail

The nearest railways stations are Nagercoil [3.2 kms], Kanyakumari [11.5 kms] and Valliyur [13 kms]. 

One can take a cab or auto to the temple.

By Road  

Suchindram Temple is located at a distance of 11 km from Kanyakumari and can be reached via road easily.

It is around 7km away from Nagercoil. There are regular buses to Suchindram from Kanyakumari as well as from Tirunelveli and Trivandrum.
