Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple – History, Pooja timings, Architecture

Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple is a 150-year-old shrine dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva and one of the oldest such temples in India. It’s located in the small village of Kavi Kaboi in Jambusar, Gujarat.

It is also known as the Disappearing Temple due to its special location.

The temple’s construction is modest and based on pillars. Still, it remains one of India’s most intriguing must-see religious attractions. Pillars mainly support the temple, hence the name ‘Stambeshwar Mahadev.’

One of the 18 Hindu Puranas, the Skanda Purana has references to this temple. It is said to have been built by the Devas (Gods), spearheaded by Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva. Legend says that he slayed a demon named Tarakasur.

It is believed that the Devas, led by Lord Kartikeya, built this Stambheshwar Mahadev Linga in the village of Kavikanboi in Jambusar, Gujarat, after destroying a demon named Tarakasur. The Skanda Purana refers to a pillar called Vishwanandak Stambh erected by the Devas during the Mahi Sagar Sangam Teerth Kshetra.

Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple, the Shiva temple that disappears twice a day!
The legend also says that despite Tarakasur’s demonic nature, he was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.

He performed intense austerities to satisfy him, which of course succeeded in pleasing Lord Shiva. It is said that the devil took this opportunity to pray for a blessing so that he would not die. But since death is inevitable,

Lord Shiva asked him to pray for another blessing. Tarakasur then prayed for a blessing saying that no one could kill him except Lord Shiva’s six-day-old son. Lord Shiva then granted his wish, after which Tarakasur went on a rampage in the three worlds and caused great destruction.

To put an end to it all, Lord Shiva created Lord Kartikeya from the fire of his third eye, thus ending the story. There is another version that says that Lord Kartikeya, who punished Tarakasur, was also impressed by his devotion to Lord Shiva. To express his gratitude, he erected a Shivalinga at the spot where Tarakasur was executed.

Why does this temple disappear?

Located a few meters away from the seashore, this temple submerges during high tide and reappears in low tide. And since the sea level rises twice during the day, the temple disappears and emerges when the water recedes.

As per the records, the garbha griha or the sanctum gets fully covered with the sea water, and only the top of the temple structure remains above water.
