Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is the great death-conquering mantra, also known as the Tryambakam mantra , is a verse from the Rigveda. This Tryambaka is addressed to the Trinity One, the epithet of Rudra (later associated with Shiva).
This verse also appears in Yajurveda. Along with the Gayatri Mantra, it is the most widely known mantra of contemporary Hinduism. The great mantra dedicated to Shiva as Mrityunjaya is found in the Rigveda. This is called the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, the conqueror of death.
Significance of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
Mahamrityunjaya mantra is also known as the Triyambaka Mantra. According to many, chanting the mantra releases a string of vibrations that realigns the physical body ensuring maintenance and restoration of good health.
This mantra has many names and forms.
- It is called the Rudra Mantra, alluding to the fiery aspect of Shiva;
- Tryambakam mantra, referring to the three eyes of Shiva and sometimes referred to as the Mrit -Sanjeevani mantra Known as this because it is a component of the “life-restoring” lore imparted to the archaic sage Shukra after completing rigorous penance.
- The sages and sages have called the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra the heart of the Vedas.
- Among the many mantras used for contemplation and meditation, this mantra occupies the highest position along with the Gayatri mantra.
