Jyotirlinga, also known as Jyotirling or Jyotirlingam, are sacred shrines dedicated to the god Shiva and are considered to be the most sacred among all the shrines in the Hindu religion. Maharashtra, a state in western India, is home to two of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines: the Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple and the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple.

The controversy surrounds the claims as some believe there are five jyotirlinga in Maharashtra which are Bhimashankar, Trimbakeshwar, Grishneshwar, Nagnath in Aundha & Parli Vaijnath.

But in reality there are only three Bhimashankar Temple , Grishneshwar Temple and Trimbakeshwar Temple.

The Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, also known as the Ghushmeshwar Temple, is located in the town of Ellora, near Aurangabad in Maharashtra.

It is believed to be one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines mentioned in the Shiva Purana and is considered to be one of the most sacred shrines in Maharashtra.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is said to have been built by the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I in the 8th century AD. The temple is made of red rocks and is beautifully carved with intricate designs and sculptures.

It is also believed that this temple has been visited by many saints, such as Gautam Rishi, Bhringi Rishi, and the Pandavas.

Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

Trimbakeshwar Temple

The Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple, also known as the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, is located in the town of Trimbakeshwar, about 30 kilometers from Nashik in Maharashtra.

This temple is also believed to be one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines mentioned in the Shiva Purana and is considered to be one of the most sacred shrines in Maharashtra.

It is said that Lord Rama himself installed the lingam at this place, and it is also believed that Sage Gautam and his wife Ahalya worshipped here. The temple is built of black stone and has a beautiful and majestic appearance.

Bhimashankar Temple

Nestled in dense forests, the Shiva temple in Bhimashankar is sixth jyotirlinga and one of the most popular places for the worship of Lord Shiva.It is located on the banks of the Bhima river and it is believed that Bhima river originates from this place.

Bhimashankar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. It is in Bhimashankar reserve, near Pune in Maharashtra. The temple is also the source of the River Bhima. A holy dip in the river is believed to wash all the sins of a person.
