Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Shiva located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the 12th jyotirlinga which is located by the banks of the holy Narmada. The course of the holy stream at this place resembles the word ‘om’ in Sanskritic language, disposition the name to the island mentioned within the ancient scriptures of India.

The city has 68 teerth (places of spiritual importance) and a group of 108 shivlingas making it an utterly important Shaiva site. River Kaveri confluences with Narmada here.  The third story from Hindu scriptures says that once upon a time there was an excellent war between Devas (gods) and Danavas (demons), during which Danavas won.

This was a major setback for Devas and hence Devas prayed to Lord Shiva. Pleased with their prayer, Lord Shiva emerged in the form of Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga and defeated Danavas.

The ancient Mamleshwar temple is on the left bank of the Narmada. The walls of this temple have sacred inscriptions written on them which are dated to 1063 AD. Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar gave patronage to this temple and is a protected monument of ASI.

The place was visited by Adi Shankaracharya who is believed to have composed many of his works by the bank of Narmada in this sacred city. Mythology says that Lord Shiva and divinity Parvati rest here in Omkareshwar thus the shayan aarti (9 pm onwards) of main temple housing the jyotirlinga attracts the utmost variety of devotees.

The devotees within the main temple of Omkareshwar 1st have the darshan of the enormous 5 faced Ganapati. This Ganapati shrine is that the center of special festivities throughout the Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Aug- Sept.

  1. It is believed that every night Lord Shiva along with Goddess Parvati comes here to rest.
  2. It is also believed that they play Chaupad which is observed every morning when priest open the temple doors .

  4. The course of the holy river of Shri Omkaleshwara Temple resembles the word ‘om’ in Sanskrit.
  5. A rounded, elliptical shaped, the Shivalinga is in the form of a rock on which constantly water is offered. Abhishek is done with milk, curd and Narmada water three times a day.Also, behind the Shivalinga is the image of Parvati in silver.

You can hire a boat once you reach the river front which can cost near about 1000-1500 INR and will take you for a parikarma around the Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple where you can visit Gauri Somnath Mandir ,Omkar Math,Patali Hanuman Mandir and Rin Mukteshwar Mahadev temple which have a lot of significance.

By Air:

The nearest Domestic Airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore which is about 84 KM.

By Rail:

Omkareshwar has its own railway station named as Omkareshwar Railway Station located at a distance of 12 km from the Omkareshwar city. It is situated on the major Ratlam-Khandwa railway line . 

By Road:

Omkareshwar is well connected with roads . One can opt for taxis or buses which are easily available from all major cities across country
