The elders say that Sage Jamadagni lived with his wife Renuka in Kajri forest on the banks of river Hindon. One day, King Sahastrabahu of Hastinapur reached Kajri forest while hunting.

The king was fascinated by Renuka’s beauty at the hut and forcibly took her with him to Hastinapur. One day, when Renuka was freed from bondage and reached Kajri forest again, the sage refused to keep her saying that she had come after living with another man. Renuka did not agree.

The sage called his four sons and ordered them to behead their mother. Three sons backed off, but the fourth son Parshuram beheaded the mother. But Parshuram was disturbed on seeing his mother’s head lying on the ground.

He sat there and started doing penance of Shiva. Shiva appeared pleased. Parshuram asked for a promise to bring his mother back to life. It is said that Lord Shiva gave an axe to Parshuram. Parshuram killed King Sahastrabahu with this axe.

Over time, the temple turned into ruins. After a long time, one day the queen of Landaura came out for a walk and her elephant stopped there. Even after the mahout’s best efforts, the elephant did not move from there.

Then the queen ordered the soldiers to dig that place. During the digging, a Shivling appeared there, on which the queen built a temple.

This Shivling and the temple built on it are today famous as Parashurameshwar Temple. Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Krishna Bodh Ashram Ji Maharaj also performed penance at this holy place.
