Kamakhya Temple is situated at about 10 Kilometers from Guwahati, Assam at the peaks of Nilanchal Mountains. It is one of the 52 Shaktipeeth Temples dedicated to Goddess Sati , it is also one of the oldest Shaktipeeth temples and a really unique one too. Kamakhya Devi is also referred to as the ‘Bleeding Goddess’.
The history of the temple dates back to Mata Sati taking her own life by jumping in the Yagya which was performed by her Father Daksha in which he knowingly didn’t invite Shiva who was Mata Sati’s spouse. This leads to Shiva taking his wife’s corpse and roaming in the pain.
This lead to Lord Vishnu using his Sudarshan chakra and catting Mata Sati’s remains which resulted in 52 pieces and thus lead information of 52 Shaktipeeths.

It is believed that the female genitalia or ‘Yoni’ fell on the place where the present Kamakhya temple is situated today. King Nara Narayana of Cooch Behar reconstructed the temple in 1665 after it was destroyed by the foreign invaders.
The most important part of the temple is the Garbha Grihya which is located 20 feet under the ground in a small cave. In the Garbh Grihya, there is no idol of Mata instead there is a small Yoni-shaped Kund called Yoni Kund where one can see water coming out of it. This Kund is always covered with red cloth and flowers.
Apart from Garbhagriha, the temple has three mandaps named Calantha, Pancaratna, and Natamandira. Of which general people cannot visit the Calantha Mandapa. Pancaratna Mandapa houses an idol of Goddess Sati and the last chamber is beautifully decorated by the ancient Sculptures.
