There is no deity or idol that is worshiped. It has the series of natural flames or Jyotis since times immemorial believed to be the symbol of Goddess. Jawala Ji is a great heritage center for not only the people of Jawala Mukhi, Kangra or Himachal Pradesh but of the whole world.

During March to April and September to October every year, colorful fairs are held during the Navaratra celebration.

It is a foresaid that centuries ago, a cowherd found that one among his cows was always without milk. He followed the cow to search out out the cause. He saw a woman popping out of the forest who drank the cow’s milk, then disappeared in a very flash of sunshine.

The cowherder went to the king and told him the story. The king was aware of the legend that Sati’s tongue had fallen in this area. The king tried, without success, to find that sacred spot. Again, some years later, the cowherder visited the king to report that he had seen a flame burning within the mountains.

The king found the spot and had darshan (vision) of the holy flame. He engineered a temple there and organized for monks to interact in regular worship. It is believed that the Pandavas came later and renovated the temple. Raja Bhumi Chand first built the temple

There are nine different flames within the temple and each signifies something different.

  • About Prashad: Devotees can either buy Prashad from any of the nearby shops of the temple or bring in their own prasad from home. Usually, the prasad that is offered to the deity includes pan, supari, dhawaza, narela, loung, and elaichi.
  • Climate: During summer, the climate is mild and light woolens/cotton are recommended. In winter, the temperature can drop to freezing point when heavy woolens are required.

How to Reach Jawalaji Temple:

By Air:

The nearest airport is at Gaggal is 46 km from the temple. One can take a bus from there to the shrine. Taxi facilities are also available.

By Rail:

The closest broad gauge railhead is at Pathankot, 123 km away. Both bus facilities and taxi services are available from here.

By Road:

From Delhi, the road distance is 473 km and from Shimla is 212 km. Roads are well maintained.

About 350m from the shrine and 100m from the bus station, Himachal Tourism runs Hotel Jwalaji at Jwalamukhi. This is an elegant dressed-stone building with lawns and trees. Its modern rooms make for a comfortable and convenient stay.
